Title: The Stronghold Year: 2008 Material: Wood Size variable: 7.5 ton metric Photos by: Jann Averwerser Info: The site, a functional pedestrian underpass at the junction of the Old Town ring road (Altstadtring) and Maximilianstrasse was converted into a labyrinth of sorts, with wooden fences used to construct a path and maze within the underground walkway. The heavily trafficked urban space, normally dimly lit and highly polluted, was transformed by the installation, providing both a physical and mental experience. The front of the path is identical to the back and spotlights were placed in one room while the other was kept dark, emphasizing the spatial disorientation that ensues. The pine smell from the raw wood overtook the space. |
